List of The Darkest Tarot Decks

If you enjoy the darker side of things then these tarot decks might be for you. I personally prefer decks which are mysterious looking. There are lots of cute tarot and oracle decks and I’ll probably make a post about them some time, but for now here is a list of my favourite scary dark tarot decks.

The Dark Mansion Tarot

This whimsically dark deck is wonderful to look at with lots of little details. The symbolism is based on the Rider Waite deck but it has a completely different feel to it. The artwork reminds me of the ‘Deviant Moon’ deck and also makes me think of Tim Burton movies.

Gothic Tarot

These beautiful cards by Anne Stokes are filled with darkness. They have a more contemporary feel about them even though they depict classic mythical Creatures such as vampires, bats, unicorns and dragons.

Prisma/Light Visions

Both the Prisma and Light Visions deck were created by LA artist James R Eads. These imaginative decks have captured the attention of many tarot readers and non tarot readers alike and is now considered a cult classic. They look incredibly dark and mysterious and feel as though they can impart magical wisdom with every reading. Both decks look very similar and have almost the same illustrations however the light visions is monochrome and the prisma visions is in colour.

Occult Tarot

It’s one thing to look dark and scary, but some decks are more than that. The Occult Tarot deck by author and Occultist, Travis McHenry is the first tarot deck to faithfully adhere to the Solomonic principles of demon conjuration, the Occult Tarot allows practitioners to discover the power of ancient Demons and learn to tame the beasts that wander between the physical and spiritual worlds.

The Demon-Possessed Tarot

Another deck by Travis McHenry is the Demon-Possessed Tarot. I’m not sure if this deck has been released yet however there is a kickstarter page for it. According to its description, this deck captures the essence of every demon of the Goetia and traps them in the cards.  The cards look like they’re authentic copies from a deck created in the 1600s by a conjurer and then hidden away in the wall of a castle for four hundred years. This deck feels ancient and mystical. Each card is said to be truly unique with a life all of its own.

Thoth Tarot

Famous occultist Aleister Crowley was once considered the most wicked man in the world. It is no wonder that many people including some tarot readers fear Crowley’s Thoth deck. Apart from it being considered a difficult deck to get into, and also terrifyingly evil, the artwork by Lady Frieda Harris is actually very pretty with its geometric shapes and bright block colours. What makes it dark and mysterious is that Aleister Crowley combined the motives of the tarot with the worlds of magic, alchemy, astrology and Kabbala, and with the myths of ancient cultures, especially Egyptian. When you play with these cards, you tap into another world.

Special Mention ⬇️

Gummy Bear Tarot

I had to include this unusual deck somewhere. Why is it dark? Well, seeing a poor little gummy bear hanging upside down is pretty dark to me, plus anything this happy must surely have a darker side.

    • Haha yeah I know what you mean, I can do without anymore demons too, but the cards really do look cool.
The gummy bear ones make me feel weird, I can’t explain it haha they’ve gotta be evil! 😀

    • In my opinion, no tarot deck can be dangerous, but again that’s just my opinion based on my own experiences.. I haven’t tried the Demon Possessed deck though so who knows haha

  2. Thank you for an insightful post Morgan Tarot. I have a deck called The Dark Angel Tarot. I don’t use it too much because it tends to give dark outcomes. I’ll admit the darkness sometimes completes me. My go-to decks are Golden Dawn, and Osho. These are center on the light/dark spectrum. I have the Osho app on my phone. Do you have a favorite tarot app? All things considered, I’ve yet to find the one deck to fall in love with. That’s what compels me to make my own. Which, is turning into a lifelong endeavor. Peace-out!

    • Thank you and yeah I have decks that give a sorta darker reading like my thoth deck but I’m the same as you, I still haven’t found the perfect deck. I’ve found the ugliest decks I have give better readings for some reason haha

I don’t have any tarot apps, I’ll have to check some of them out

      • Actually, the Gummy Bear Tarot, though hilarious in a macabre way is the most disturbing… like a clown with candy calling out from a sewer inlet disturbing. The rest are more the disturb the peace that’s standard issue in the rockin’ unconscious intensity of uncut identity = intensity… more imbalanced to the Chthonic, though honest in the lean into and living in the Dark.

This is a great post as you didn’t just stick your toes in or view from afar. You went all in directly. Kudos.

      • Haha yes you’re completely right, nice analogy! 😁 it’s deceptive with its colourful and cute illustrations but it’s just hiding its evil to lure you in haha.
Thank you for the kind words, I actually wasn’t sure if to go into more detail but I decided to only focus on why the cards are dark instead of doing full reviews.

      • I resonate with you dialing into the whole world of the single dark quality. It’s much like one cannot visit the whole world at one time, even if they comprehend it that way. I appreciate that you visited the part of this area of the Tarot world that is dark and chronic and depthful. Yes, there are beasts there, though I’d invite them to a dinner party for their honesty with themselves over someone in the light whose dark gets washed out in the mirage of de-enhanced Shadow. I live in Both/And, a foot on each side, and sometimes… most times, you gotta give your butt a rest from straddling the fence and dive in to fully swim in each… and ebb and flow, ebb and flow.

Again, I appreciate you going to a specific place in the world, The Dark, much more than hypothesizing about it from afar.

Thanks for the deep and dark swim. Where’s Leviathan? Maybe I could buy him/her a coffee in the Mariana Trench. 🙂

  3. It’s funny how people are so scared of the Thoth Tarot. I have been really getting to know it better and now I realize it is not evil or scary but really just deep and requires effort and intentionality to work with – but when you respect it and give it the attention it deserves it can be super rewarding in its depth.

    • I completely agree with you. I think rather than being afraid of the thoth deck being evil, a lot of people are afraid of it because it’s quite difficult to get into. To better understand the deck you have to do a lot of reading and research.. well, that’s what I did when I received the deck haha.

  4. Some cool ones here! Thanks. Another one that might fit in is Haunted House Tarot. I got it a few months ago and it’s a lot of fun, especially if you’re familiar with classic horror movies.
